BREAKING: Missourians apparently reject proposal to inject partisanship and politics into Missouri courts

Missourians for Fair and Impartial Courts Action Fund today announced that according to an analysis of signatures submitted to the Secretary of State by ShowMe Better Courts, a group proposing a constitutional amendment to dismantle Missouri’s Non-Partisan Court plan, it appears that insufficient signatures were collected to qualify the amendment and send it to the voters. The review predicts that ShowMe Better Courts fell short of the signature requirement in at least six of nine Congressional Districts.

Statement from Chip Robertson Regarding Recent Anti-Court Activity

A small group of individuals, hiding behind the name, Better Courts for Missouri, claim to be a “coalition of Missourians from all walks of life.” As with the Adam Smith Foundation, there is no evidence of members of this so-called coalition or who is affiliated with the organization. Anyone can put up a website and claim to be a “coalition,” but to be credible, the names of the individuals and organizations standing behind it should be released.

Protecting Missourians’ Rights to Fair and Impartial Courts

Missourians for Fair and Impartial Courts applauds the Appellate Judicial Commission for sending Governor Blunt a balanced panel of three outstanding candidates for the vacancy on the Missouri Supreme Court. The Missouri Nonpartisan Court Plan provides a balanced approach to the selection of our judges by keeping politics and special interest influence out of the process.

Statement from Missourians for Fair and Impartial Courts

The Missouri House Committee on General Laws will be considering two bills THIS WEEK that would weaken the Missouri nonpartisan court plan, which ensures fair and impartial courts. There are two standards by which we assess any proposed changes to the plan:

1. Does it inject more politics or allow more influence and control by politicians into the process of selecting judges, and
2. Will it adversely affect the pool of qualified applicants for the judicial positions?

Court Plan detractors mislead the public, push politics over fairness

Jefferson City — St. Louis attorney William Placke’s plan to undermine the Missouri Non Partisan Court Plan for choosing judges is being circulated in an attempt to convince voters that the Plan denies them input to the judicial selection and retention process. “This revamping of the plan in the guise of giving the public more involvement in the process is a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” said Chip Robertson, former chief justice and spokesman of Missourians for Fair and Impartial Courts.
