Missouri’s Non-Partisan Court Plan provides for the selection of judges based on merit rather than on politics or campaign contributions from special interest groups. It gives citizens a say in which judges retain their seats on the bench, but prevents powerful special interests from buying the election of a judge.

In the weeks ahead, a group attacking the Missouri Plan will be collecting signatures in an attempt to place a measure that would require direct elections of judges on the November 2010 ballot. Now more than ever, we must ramp up our efforts to protect the Missouri Plan from attacks that threaten to not only compromise the integrity of an independent judiciary but also infringe upon our most fundamental constitutional rights.
